Characteristics
Remand prison is located in the centre of Hradec Kralove and is adjacent to the building of Regional Court. The object was built in the year 1933. In 1996 was accomplished partial reconstruction and modernization of infrastructure and accomodation space for detainees, including showers; at the same time new cloakrooms for prison staff were built as well.

Official capacity of the remand prison, including imprisonment branch in Pouchov, is 333 places. 161 places are allocated for pre-trial detention, 172 for imprisonment. Inmates are accommodated in dormitories; the largest one has six beds. There are 76 dormitories for two inmates and 34 dormitories for 4-6 inmates. Official capacity of imprisonment branch in Pouchov is 98 places. Convicts are accomodated in dormitories; 11 dormitories have 6 beds, 4 dormitories have 12 beds. No smaller dormitories are at the disposal.

Treatment - Rehabilitation Programs
Pre-trial detention in Hradec Kralove is mostly performed as closed detention in locked cells and toilets are separated from space for accommodation. For the reason of system of internal differentiation also unit with moderate regime of detention with capacity of 22 places was established. This unit is equipped with clubroom, TV set, temporary gym for bodybuilding, table tennis, rotoped and with some another things, which can improve conditions of detention. Detainees are allowed to move freely within the framework of specified space, which helps them to bridge negative impacts of detention.

Part of the prison has been detached for aimed and informal treatment with juveniles and young adults in detention. For this purpose so-called semi-free unit with six cells and 17 places where there are a clubroom and temporary workshops equipped with normal tools for processing wood and metals.

Independent brankch for imprisonment in Pouchov
At present this branch is intended for convicts sentenced into category with minimum security. With respect of profile of the ,prison, convicts work inside the institution within the framework of jobs concerning operation and maintenance of the prison (kitchen, laundry, stocks, and the like); also private companies employ some convicts. But demands of these companies for number of employees exceed possibilities of the prison; the greatest problems lie in health conditions of convicts and character of their crimes.

Convicts may choose from the whole range of sport activities, furthermore, there are groups of interest like ornithology, gardening of handcraft focused on toys production, which are later gifted to various facilities for children. As for educational activities great attention is paid to learning English and Czech languages, traffic education and computers.

During preparation of rehabilitation and treatment program it is necessary carefully differentiate and think out methods because convicts with rich criminal record, sometimes sentenced for serious crimes, meet in the prison convicts sentenced for crimes of negligence.

A psychologist, eventually a pedagogue, if specified, individually accomplishes special educational procedures. There is also anti-drug consulting operating on the basis of a decree of Director General of Prison Service. Co-operation with social curators is good. Licensed voluntary representatives of individual churches provide religious care.

Care of Personnel
In co-operation fund of cultural and social needs regular skiing trips to Orlicke hory and Alps are organised during winter. Representatives of the prisons participate in football and volleyball tournaments organised by the Prison Service and are successful also in shooting. The employees may borrow sports, touristic and fishing equipment, which they can use during their leisure time. Sport fans have opportunity to receive permanent tickets to football and ice-hockey matches. Once in week the sport arena TJ 5lavia is at the disposal where the prison organises indoor football matches. The new swimming pool with aqua-park and squash centre can also be visited by means of permanent tickets. Furthermore, the prison arranges excursions theatres and concerts.
